Dimitar Berbatov's Manchester United future in doubt following Champions League final snub - report

The Bulgarian didn't even make the bench for United's 3-1 hammering at the hands of Barcelona and looks set to leave Old Trafford this summer despite a successful season

Speculation over the future of Manchester United's Dimitar Berbatov has gone into overdrive after the Bulgarian failed to make the squad for the Champions League final defeat by Barcelona.

Berbatov, who is the club's leading scorer this season with 20 goals, wasn't expected to start the game but failed even to make the bench, with Michael Owen favoured ahead of him.

Rumours that Berbatov had stormed out of the stadium were quashed by Sir Alex Ferguson after the game, the Scot insisting that the decision to leave the 30-year old striker out had been 'heartbreaking'.

He said: "These are the kind of heartbreaking decisions you have to take but you do it for the good of the team. It was a difficult decision to leave out Berbatov.

"I found it easy to pick the starting team, but difficult with the subs. I overloaded the midfield positions on the bench as I thought that was most vital for how Barcelona play and the work we needed in there.

"It came down to a choice between Michael Owen and Berbatov and my view is if you're looking for someone to nick a goal, Owen has the experience, which is why he took the spot."

erbatov has one year remaining on his contract with the club and United are reportedly keen on cashing in on the former Tottenham man while he is still a lucrative asset. A number of clubs have been touted as being potentially interested in Berbatov, with Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund said to be leading the chase.
